Thread starter NaomiP Start date Sep 10, Help Support SalonGeek:. NaomiP Well-Known Member. Hi geeks, I had my hair relaxed on 12th December , since then I've let the new growth come through as I'm trying to transition it back to curly, obviously I know that it has to grow straight then wavy before it can grow back curly but I've decided that I want to get a curly perm as my natural hair isn't as curly as I want it to be and numerous other reasons.

So my question is do you think the curly perm would take on my relaxed hair? Or just the new growth? I've attached a photo of my hair this morning, that's how it is if I wash it leave it to air dry and sleep on it and also a pic of what I'm wanting to achieve. Thanks, Naomi xx. During the s, many black women wore jheri curl s—the only type of perm for black hair. Transitioning from a relaxer to a Jheri curl takes patience and time. Grow out your hair. The only way to transition from a relaxer to a perm is by growing new hair. You cannot perm hair that was previously relaxed nor can you relax hair that was previously permed since doing so will severely damage it.

So you must cut off the relaxed hair, grow new hair and eventually perm the new hair. Wear a wig or weave while transitioning. Cutting off previously relaxed hair is the first step in the transition process. However, most women do not want to have sparse or short hair. To hide the fact that you have cut your hair, wear a wig or hair weave. The lace-front wig is popular since it looks natural, is easy to wear and lasts a long time.

Jheri curls require at least four inches of hair. Since hair grows at a rate of one-half inch per month, expect to wear the weave or wig for at least eight months.

Have a professional perm your hair. Do not try to self-perm hair, especially if you have never used a perm before. Sodium hydroxide relaxers are known as lye relaxers and calcium hydroxide as no-lye relaxers.

The latter is generally reserved for more sensitive scalps but can be harsher on hair than lye relaxers. Both can be used on curly, coiled or waved locks. Ammonium thioglycolate is a much weaker formula that works best on fine, curly or wavy hair types.

Consult a trained stylist to determine which formula is best for your hair type. Relaxed hair should be washed at least once a week, especially during warmer months when sun, chlorine and saltwater can negatively impact chemically treated locs. Invest in a shampoo with hydrating properties to help you clean, maintain and restore hydration.

Follow up with high-quality conditioner , specially formulated to promote softness. After all, the key to healthy permed hair is moisture and consistency. Pro tip: Consider co-washing washing with conditioner only because it is less stripping than traditional shampoo and conditioner process.

Hot oil treatments, deep conditioners, and hair masks can add extra hydration and introduce nourishing ingredients to help hair stay light and flowy. After cleansing hair, apply your treatment section-by-section with special attention to the scalp. The treatment will help you reinvigorate dry strands and restore balance to the scalp. For added benefit, consider indulging in your treatment a few days before you touch-up your relaxer as a protective measure.

Relaxers straighten the hair but weaken the hair shaft. Oils like coconut that contain a trace of protein work great for relaxed hair as well as protein-free oils such as argan oil , shea oil , babassu oil , maracuja oil , sacha inchi oil , alone or combined. Oils work double duty, helping to repair the hair and increase resistance from breakage. Neat and healthy relaxed hair requires regular touch-ups—reapplications of relaxers to newly grown hair.

Without touch-ups, hair is prone to breakage. Ask your stylist how frequently you should get touch-ups. The need can range from two weeks to 3 months, depending on your hair type. The perk of a relaxer is that it makes you less reliant on hot tools to straighten and style hair. Instead, opt for alternative smoothing methods such as sleeping with a silk or satin scarf to flatten hair, or using a wrapping foam or leave-in-conditioner to soften and smooth hair.
