Canker sores, also called aphthous ulcers, are small, shallow lesions that develop on the soft tissues in your mouth or at the base of your gums. Unlike cold sores, canker sores don't occur on the surface of your lips and they aren't contagious. They can be painful, however, and can make eating and talking difficult. Most canker sores go away on their own in a week or two.
Check with your doctor or dentist if you have unusually large or painful canker sores or canker sores that don't seem to heal. Most canker sores are round or oval with a white or yellow center and a red border. Hydrogen peroxide As an antiseptic, hydrogen peroxide can treat an infection or sore inside your mouth. Salt water Gargling salt water is another way to reduce pain, inflammation, and prevent infection. Honey Honey is a natural antibacterial and has been shown to be effective in treating several types of wounds.
Coconut oil Coconut oil may be able to heal a sore tongue because of its antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. Chamomile Chamomile is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties. Ice, ice pops, and cold water Ice has numbing qualities, so drinking ice-cold water or sucking on an ice cube or ice pop can help relieve some tongue soreness, including soreness caused by dry mouth, or a burning mouth.
OTC treatments You can also visit your local drugstore for OTC topical treatments that work by coating the tongue and protecting it from further irritation. Examples include: benzocaine Orabase, Zilactin-B OTC hydrogen peroxide rinses Peroxyl, Orajel Vitamin supplements If your tongue soreness is caused by a vitamin deficiency , consider taking a multivitamin or a vitamin B complex supplement.
